Sawtooth Avalanche Center

Skiers triggered this slab avalanche from a ridge Dec. 12, 2016 near Galena Pass. These avalanches are often the most dangerous and break like a pane of glass before cascading downhill.

KETCHUM — The Sawtooth Avalanche Center has issued a back country avalanche warning from 6:30 a.m. Friday through 7:30 a.m. Saturday for these areas: the Sawtooth, Soldier, Smoky, White Cloud, Boulder and Pioneer mountains including the mountains near Banner Summit, Stanley, Smiley Creek, Galena Summit, Ketchum and Fairfield.

This is a high avalanche danger for the warning area. Heavy snow and wind are combining to overload a weak snowpack. Widespread avalanching will occur.

When very dangerous avalanche conditions exist, travel in avalanche terrain is discouraged. Avalanches may run long distances into flat areas and can run into mature forests. Stay off of, and out from below, slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

Similar avalanche danger may exist at locations outside the coverage area of this or any avalanche warning.
