BURLEY - An Aberdeen man who allegedly killed a Rupert man and beat his fiancee during a drug deal Sept. 19 may have tried to shoot the woman as well, according to court records.

Gerry Salgado, 22, was bound over to Cassia County 5th District Court Thursday on charges of felony first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, battery with intent to commit a serious felony, robbery, grand theft and drug trafficking in methamphetamine.

He will be arraigned in Cassia County District Court at 9 a.m., Nov. 24, according to court records.

Salgado is being held in the Mini-Cassia Criminal Justice Center on $1 million bond for allegedly killing Liopoldo Amezcua, 25, and hitting Estela Castro, 46, during a drug deal. Castro sustained large lacerations at the back of her neck, bruising over her body and had some of her teeth knocked out during an attack at 2850 Baseline Road near the Raft River Store, according to court records.

Court records show the attempted murder charge was filed because Salgado allegedly attempted to shoot her as well, but his gun jammed, and also due to the nature of the injuries she sustained from the beating.

According to a court affidavit, a handgun found in a Ford Ranger near the crime scene, which belonged to Salgado, contained a live round that had jammed in the chamber. Amezcua's wallet was also found.

After the alleged attack, Castro called 911 and reported she and Amezcua had picked up a man who needed a ride and that he attacked the couple. Later, in the hospital, Castro identified Salgado from a photo lineup and told police that Salgado had allegedly requested that she and Amezcua sell him an ounce of methamphetamine, according to court records.

According to court records, at the time of the incident Amezcua, Castro and Anna Zavala, 28, of Rupert, were all under investigation for alleged drug dealings.

Castro and Zavala have both been charged in U.S. District Court with one count of distribution of a controlled substance stemming from the investigation that was underway before the shooting.

Castro was released from the Bannock County Jail Oct. 7 on her personal recognizance. Zavala, who is being held in a Pocatello jail, waived her right to a preliminary hearing Thursday and is slated for a detention hearing at 3 p.m. Monday.
