HANSEN • The High Desert Nordic Association’s biggest social event of the year is its annual Moonlight Ski and Dinner in the South Hills, and all cross-country skiers are invited.

This year’s moonlight gathering is set for Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Magic Mountain Resort lodge on Rock Creek Road. Dinner is at 6 p.m., and participants will leave for skiing by 7:30 p.m.

The Moonlight Ski is meant to appeal to all skill levels.

“A beginners group will ski into the campround loop and nearby, always reasonably close to the lodge, as we did last year,” said Valdon Hancock, club president.

And the more experienced skiers? They can expect some stunning views in the moonlight.

“Dennis Kincaid usually leads this, and it is usually different every year,” Hancock wrote. “The intermediate ski usually involves all or parts of the mapped intermediate trails: Penstemon Trail (with the 500 Road), Rock Creek Trail (long and short loops) and the Pike Springs Trail. Dennis may not even plan it out until the day of the ski, and the route may be somewhat different from existing trails.”

The event is open to nonmembers. There is no cost to join the 7:30 p.m. ski. Dinner, including Dutch oven dessert, will be $10; payment must be received by Wednesday, Jan. 28. Mail a check at least two days prior to HDNA, c/o John Larimer, 2484 Rock Creek Road, Hansen, ID 83334.

You can call Hancock (208-420-9042) or email him (skihdna@gmail.com) to cancel your dinner reservation by Thursday, Jan. 29, to have your money refunded. It also will be refunded if High Desert Nordic has to cancel or postpone the event because of weather.
