SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church is telling its local leaders that same-sex wedding ceremonies and receptions are prohibited in their churches.

In a statement issued Friday, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reiterated its belief that homosexuality is not condoned by God.

Church leaders say civil law or trends in society cannot change the "moral law that God has established.''

The LDS church's statement comes on a day when the Obama administration extended federal recognition to the marriages of more than 1,000 same-sex couples in Utah that took place before the Supreme Court put those unions in the state on hold.

Church leaders support the state's appeal of the Dec. 20 ruling from the federal judge that struck down Utah's ban on same-sex marriages.

"They are trying very hard to make discrimination look respectable by calling it `tradition,' but whatever term is used in the bill, it remains discrimination and a violation of the basic human rights of LGBT people,"

The sad thing is that the above comments are what was written about the Russian government yet it also applies to the LDS church.

The State of Utah which is primarily LDS is leading the drive to prevent prohibit gays and lesbians from having the basic right to marry. In Idaho, you rank 49th in education, you cry foul when the forbidden word "vagina" in mentioned in a health class. You elect rapist to your state legislature, drunks to your U.S. Senate, an on-line diploma mill graduate as the leader of the education system. LDS introduced the pleasure that is polygamy to this country, you are one of the lowest earning states and this is what you have to complain about?

I guess the mormons and Russions have more in common than putting on the Winter Olympics.

Well said j2smith, morality should never be legislated. It has never worked out well in history.

You all preach tolerance but talk out both sides of you mouths. If I'm straight I have to agree with being gay is normal and I can not have an opinion about how wrong or immoral it is, I'm a bigot or discriminatory person, however if you are gay, you can tell me how wrong being straight is or How God says its ok to be gay and you can force you belief on me and your not being a bigot Or discriminatory? , typical, you want it all
