OAKLEY — Auditions for “Walking Happy” will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 12 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 13 at Howell’s Opera House, 160 Blaine Ave., Oakley. The play has fourteen male parts and seven female parts for anyone interested, 16 years and older. Participants must be prepared to sing a short musical number, providing their own accompanist or CD. Reading from a provided script will be required, as well as possibly learning a short dance.
“Walking Happy” tells the story of Old Hobson, a penny-pinching boot maker who is frustrated to have three daughters to marry off. Clever Maggie, the eldest, is his most valuable business asset. Feeling that life and love have passed her by, Maggie rebels and sets up her own shop. She persuades her father’s best boot maker, Will Mossop, to join her. The transformations of Maggie and humble Will in their new situation make for a comic delight.
“Walking Happy” is based on the play “Hobson’s Choice” by Harold Brighouse — music by James Van Heusen and lyrics by Sammy Cahn. Directed by Deborah Jones, performances of the musical are scheduled for March 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16, 17, 19, 22, 23, and 24. It is sponsored by the Oakley Valley Arts Council.
