TWIN FALLS — The Magic Valley Symphony announces its 2018 Youth Soloist Competition. Musicians up to age 24 are invited to compete for scholarship prizes and the opportunity to perform with the Symphony next October. Entrants who have not reached age 19 will compete separately in the young adult division. Applications are due May 16.
Auditions are scheduled for June 9 at Canyon Ridge High School, 300 North College Road W., Twin Falls. Instrumental musicians should prepare any movement of a standard concerto or concert piece with orchestral accompaniment. For vocalists, any standard aria or song with orchestral accompaniment may be performed. Audition pieces should be six to 10 minutes in length; but extended accompaniment sections may be cut if needed, to meet the time requirements. Contestants must provide their own piano accompanist. Memorization is encouraged but not required.
The Magic Valley Symphony is a volunteer community orchestra that has performed continuously since 1959. The Youth Soloist Competition, held in even-numbered years, allows advanced music students to gain essential experience needed for admission to conservatories and university music programs.
