GLENNS FERRY — A meet-the-artist reception will be held for Debra Bonsack at 6 p.m. March 16 at the Crossings Winery, 1289 W. Madison Ave., Glenns Ferry. The show, “My Happy Place” — capturing the sweetness of life as perceived by the innocence of a child — will run from March 5-April 2.
Bonsack specializes in textural acrylic — a medium that is fluid like watercolor, yet thick like palette-knife oil painting. This unique technique has become her signature style.
As a small child, Bonsack found an easel in her family’s portrait studio. She completed her first oil painting by age seven. In high school, she sold more work at the annual art show than any previous student.
After a brief break to start a family, Bonsack resumed her career as a painter of figurative work. Her love of animals and the rural California community where she was raised evoked a large body of western work. After acquiring a degree in visual art from Cal State Stanislaus and an art teaching-credential from Chapman University, she became a credentialed high school art teacher.
Bonsack upheld this position for twenty-five years while showing her work at festivals and exhibits across the western United States. An extremely energetic painter, she exhibited in about 30 shows per year while teaching full-time and running her own galleries. She has been known to paint a dozen works in a week and sell as many on the weekend.
The artist has received countless ribbons, Best of Shows and People’s Choice awards, but continues to feel her prolific sales record and appreciative student satisfaction remain the best compliments to her career.
