This weekend's top entertainment picks
Wendell has its cow patty bingo. Buhl has elaborate costumes on Mexican dancers. Hailey has men in kilts hurling weights. And Twin Falls has beds on wheels, propelled by sweating racers. This is the weekend Magic Valley lets loose for real summer abandon.
In Wendell, Dairy Days will reach their climax Saturday, as elsewhere in the valley the Buhl Fiesta showcases traditional dancers in swirling skirts and black suits, an artist explains her quirky "pie tin" art in Filer, and a Scottish Festival in Hailey pits locals against each other in ancient contests of athleticism. (The children's competition will guarantee that your youngsters sleep soundly on Saturday night.) Saturday's crazy bed races in downtown Twin Falls will benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society, and a tour of historical homes that day will showcase Oakley's remarkable Victorian architecture, inside and out.
As tonight's warmup for all of that, catch the gala opening of Twin Falls' Art in the Park. More than 30 regional artists -- for the first time, screened through applications -- will offer their fine art and original crafts in booths around City Park. The sale continues through Sunday, but take this tip: Saturday is the day to go. That's when a Rotary Club fundraiser will debut 15 original flavors of ice cream and invite your votes.
Touring pianist Marvin Goldstein and vocalist Vanessa Joy - who have some renown among Magic Valley's LDS community - will perform on a Twin Falls stage tonight and in Burley on Saturday. St. Thomas Playhouse opens its production of "Footloose" on Wednesday in Sun Valley.
And the Twin Falls Tonight summer concert series starts its six-week run on Wednesday night. Outside, of course. They can't keep you indoors for long.
