Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has been released from the hospital after two weeks.

Otter was hospitalized at St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise for two back surgeries to treat a bulging disc and a subsequent infection. He was released Thursday and is now home, said his spokesman Jon Hanian. Hanian said Otter is doing “much better” than he was.

“Doctors are keeping a pretty close watch on him, which, I understand, is par for the course given the infection he had, but he was in the hospital from July 15 till today,” Hanian said. “That’s a pretty good stint, and he’s just very happy to be able to go home.”

Hanian said Otter remained in touch with his office daily during his hospitalization, reaching out to staff with questions on different issues.

Otter doesn’t yet know when he will be able to return to the office.

Otter is 75 and in his third term as governor. He doesn’t plan to run for re-election next year.
